The Nonbeliever’s Favorite Verse

Editors note: I borrowed the following article from my churches daily devotional from 8/18/2010, I don’t think Pastor Greg will mind me sharing his wisdom with you. Enjoy

Do you know what the nonbeliever’s favorite verse is? It is Matthew 7:1: “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.” This verse is usually quoted after we say something like, “Well you know what? I don’t think that is right.”

This verse, however, is not telling us that we should not make judgments, because in other passages we read that as believers, we are indeed to make evaluations, to be discerning, and yes— to even make judgments. In fact, the Bible asks, “Don’t you realize that someday we believers will judge the world? And since you are going to judge the world, can’t you decide even these little things among yourselves?” (1 Corinthians 6:2). We are also told in Scripture that “judgment must begin with God’s household” (1 Peter 4:17).

For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News?
— 1 Peter 4:17

We are to judge, but we are not to condemn. In fact, a better translation of Matthew 7:1 would be: “Do not condemn others, and you will not be condemned.” I am in no position to condemn a person. But I am in a position to make judgments about things, situations, viewpoints, and even about people to some degree.

“Don’t judge!” is said by people who don’t like it when we dare to have a Christian worldview. In fact, I have found that the most narrow-minded people are those who claim to be the most broad-minded. Those who claim to be the most accepting are often the least accepting. Because when a Christian has an opinion, a nonbeliever will say, “How dare you say that! Who are you to judge?”

There is a living God, and He has revealed himself in the pages of Scripture. Therefore, as believers, we accept the fact that we have absolute truth from God. And we develop our worldview from what the Bible teaches.

Greg Laurie is head pastor at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California. Greg has written dozens of books on Christian Living and has preached the Word of God all over the world. After you read some of his work or listen to a pod cast or two you will see why I say “it never stops amazing me how often he hits the nail right on my head.”

A well marked tendency in man is looking for a culprit of everything that happens especially when something is related to us. This guilt that man seeks in others, is an image of his own error and when the man points to someone as guilty is a sign that the real culprit is himself.

Jesus showed us this great truth when he said: Luke 6:42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck that is in your eye, you look not the beam that is in thine own eye? Hypocrite, first take the beam out of thine own eye, and you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in thy brother’s eye.

Bible Verse of the day February 5th, 2012

~ Verse of the Day ~

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

    -- 1 Corinthians 10:12,13

Time for Reflection and Prayer for Guidance

December 25, 2009 @ 1:53 PM

So today I have recommitted myself and exhort you also to make an example of yourself by doing “the right thing” in all things. It’s pretty simple actually, if we do His will, he is free to fight our battles, but if we don’t, and we refuse to repent of our sin and except His Grace, can we honestly expect the Creator’s intercession on our behalf, in personal, civil or political matters?

Conflict Of Good & Evil

November 28, 2009 @ 11:02 AM

God is a God of grace and it says in 2 Peter 3:9 that “He is not willing that any one perish but that all will come to repentance.” Yes he loves all of us, Christians, Muslims, and Jews, not one more than the other, but His grace can be refused by our rebellious will. It will break his heart but when the time comes he will judge and punish us accordingly!

Trusting the Plan

October 10, 2009 @ 2:15 PM

When life is hard, when life hands us sorrows and disappointments, when life doesn’t go according to our plan, when we feel the heavy burden of our utter lack of understanding, we must trust. We must trust passionately and completely, knowing that He that is in us is greater than the world around us.

This is absolutely a powerful video. It is worth taking a few minutes to watch when you are not rushed.

Missing Boaters Found

September 07, 2009 @ 9:30 AM

“We tried flagging’ everybody we could, but I guess it was not our time to go home yet. They’d come straight at us, we’d be like ‘Hey,’ and there they’d go,” Hall told KHOU. “I was like, well, you know the good man above, either he’s teaching us a lesson or showing us something. And finally, when that boat came, it was just … I don’t know.”
“It was a miracle,” Phillips said, finishing Hall’s sentence.

Little Miracles

September 02, 2009 @ 12:17 PM

I don’t mean to say God doesn’t hear us, the bible tells us that he most certainly does listen to our prayers, he just doesn’t audibly speak to us. Most of us are so out of touch with our inner voice that we couldn’t hear his voice even if he did speak directly to us and our eyes are so clouded with the things of this world that seeing the miracles he does every day is nearly impossible.
