My Walk with Lynn

During an evening walk recently I mentioned to my wife that sometimes I felt like God was putting me in my place, that he was spanking me for being disobedient in the past and scolding me for my lack of wisdom. The subject of my concern was an opportunity, clearly presented to me only because Gods wants me involved in some way, but the final outcome is a big unknown to me and frankly a bit scary.

I was voicing my concern that a few very large roadblocks were still clearly looming, obstacles of my own making that will only be overcome with His help. Lynn was firmly correcting me, with that 30 year of marriage type of love only a life partner can pull off, and telling me God does not scold his children. She said I should continue to pray and ask God for the wisdom and guidance I need.

I read somewhere that the most important things to pray for when you are going through a trial or temptation is not strength, grace or deliverance. No. Ask for wisdom!

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

When James wrote those words his purpose was to guide the Christian to maturity in his faith. When you endure trials, you need wisdom so you will not waste the opportunities God gives you to mature. Wisdom will help you apply the knowledge gained through experience for your good and God’s glory.

James not only explained what to ask for (wisdom), but he also described how to ask. Ask in faith. Do not be afraid. God is anxious to answer, and He will never scold you! He will just give you more grace (James 4:5 – 6) and more and more wisdom.

But asking for wisdom is only the first part of the prayer. Believing is the second part. If you doubt, you will be like one tossed by the wind, double-minded and unstable (James 1:6-8). Wisdom and maturity and belief and stability go together.

In your prayers ask God for wisdom and discernment for those times when you feel like God is scolding you.
